Entity Definition

What is a Wire EDM Machine?

A Wire Electrical Discharge Machine (Wire EDM) uses a thin electrically charged wire (typically 0.05-0.33 mm diameter brass or coated wire) to erode material through controlled electrical discharges. The wire and workpiece are submerged in deionized water dielectric, and there is no mechanical contact between tool and workpiece — eliminating cutting forces, tool deflection, and work hardening. For titanium, Wire EDM is the preferred method for cutting complex profiles, thin-wall features, sharp internal corners, and prototype geometries where conventional machining would cause deformation or residual stress.

Key Characteristics

  • Zero mechanical cutting forces — ideal for thin-wall, delicate, or hardened titanium components
  • Achieves surface finish Ra 0.4 µm with fine-finish passes — eliminates secondary polishing in many cases
  • Positioning accuracy ±0.002 mm for high-precision features
  • Taper cutting up to ±15°/100 mm for complex angled features
  • Wire diameter range 0.05-0.33 mm enables sharp internal corner radii down to 0.05 mm
  • Submerged cutting (full immersion) for improved cutting stability and wire cooling
  • Auto-threading with in-kerf re-threading for multi-feature unattended operation
  • No heat-affected zone (HAZ) — minimal thermal input to workpiece material

Operations & Capabilities

Cutting Capabilities

Wire EDM machines perform the following critical cutting operations on titanium:

Profiling — complex 2D and tapered profiles through titanium plate up to 350 mm thick
Sharp internal corners — corner radius down to 0.05 mm using 0.10 mm wire
Thin-wall slotting — slots as narrow as 0.15 mm through titanium components
Taper cutting — angled walls up to ±15° for die clearance or draft angle features
Multi-feature cutting — continuous unattended cutting of multiple parts from single plate
Micro-machining — precision features in small titanium components for medical and electronics
Through-hole cutting — wire feed-through for internal feature start holes
Hardened material cutting — post-heat-treat titanium cutting without hardness limitation
Typical Products & Components

Typical Products & Components

Wire EDM machines are used to produce the following titanium components:

Aerospace structural profiles — complex contoured brackets, gussets, and rib profiles
Medical implant features — precision slots, holes, and profiles in orthopedic implants
Prototype components — first-article parts requiring zero tooling investment
Hardened fastener slots — drive features in post-heat-treated titanium bolts
Thin-wall structural components — lightweight aerospace and medical parts
Die and punch components — titanium EDM electrodes and fixture components
Research and development parts — one-off geometries requiring maximum design flexibility
Primary Industries

Primary Industries

Wire EDM machines serve as critical manufacturing equipment across these industries:

Aerospace — Prototype and production structural profiles, hardened component features
Medical — Implant features, surgical instrument cutting edges, prototype devices
Tool & die — EDM electrodes, fixture components, precision inserts
Automotive — Prototype components, hardened gear profiles
Electronics — Micro-component cutting, connector and contact profiles
Research & development — One-off and prototype titanium component manufacturing
Alternative & Complementary Options

Alternative & Complementary Equipment

Depending on part geometry and volume, the following alternatives may be considered:

Die-Sinking EDM — Better for blind cavities, 3D shapes, and features not accessible to a wire
CNC Machining (5-Axis) — Faster material removal for 3D geometries without sharp internal corners
Laser Cutting — Faster for thin-gauge titanium sheet (<5 mm) but produces HAZ and tapered edges
Waterjet Cutting — Suitable for thick titanium plate (>50 mm) with lower precision (±0.1 mm)
Chemical Etching — Alternative for thin-gauge titanium with complex 2D profiles in high volume
