What is a Wire EDM Machine?
A Wire Electrical Discharge Machine (Wire EDM) uses a thin electrically charged wire (typically 0.05-0.33 mm diameter brass or coated wire) to erode material through controlled electrical discharges. The wire and workpiece are submerged in deionized water dielectric, and there is no mechanical contact between tool and workpiece — eliminating cutting forces, tool deflection, and work hardening. For titanium, Wire EDM is the preferred method for cutting complex profiles, thin-wall features, sharp internal corners, and prototype geometries where conventional machining would cause deformation or residual stress.

Common Names
Key Characteristics
- Zero mechanical cutting forces — ideal for thin-wall, delicate, or hardened titanium components
- Achieves surface finish Ra 0.4 µm with fine-finish passes — eliminates secondary polishing in many cases
- Positioning accuracy ±0.002 mm for high-precision features
- Taper cutting up to ±15°/100 mm for complex angled features
- Wire diameter range 0.05-0.33 mm enables sharp internal corner radii down to 0.05 mm
- Submerged cutting (full immersion) for improved cutting stability and wire cooling
- Auto-threading with in-kerf re-threading for multi-feature unattended operation
- No heat-affected zone (HAZ) — minimal thermal input to workpiece material
