Entity Definition

What is Grade 4 Titanium?

Grade 4 is the highest-strength grade in the commercially pure titanium family. Its elevated oxygen content (up to 0.40%) provides increased tensile and yield strength compared to Grades 1–3, while retaining the excellent corrosion resistance characteristic of unalloyed titanium. Grade 4 is often specified for applications requiring maximum strength within the CP series.

Classification

Commercially Pure Titanium (Alpha Phase)
UNS Number

UNS R50700

Common Names

CP-Ti Grade 4 UNS R50700 Ti Grade 4 ASTM B265 Grade 4

Key Characteristics

  • Highest strength among CP titanium grades
  • Excellent corrosion resistance in oxidizing and mild reducing environments
  • Good weldability with appropriate process controls
  • Moderate formability — less ductile than lower CP grades
  • Biocompatible — used in medical implant applications
Applicable Standards

Applicable Standards

Grade 4 titanium conforms to the following international material standards:

ASTM B265 — Sheet, Strip, and Plate

Processing Methods

Available Processing Methods

Grade 4 titanium can be processed using the following manufacturing techniques:

Cold forming — Limited; higher springback and tooling forces required
Hot forming — Recommended for complex geometries; form at 260–540°C (500–1,000°F)
CNC machining — Fair; work hardens rapidly — use sharp tools and heavy feed rates
TIG welding — Good; post-weld stress relief recommended
Laser welding — Acceptable with proper shielding gas parameters
Forging — Open and closed-die forging at 870–980°C (1,600–1,800°F)
Extrusion — Hot extrusion at 900–1,050°C with glass lubricants
Rolling — Requires intermediate annealing for significant cold reduction
Chemical etching — Slower etch rate than lower CP grades
Downstream Products

Typical Products & Components

Grade 4 titanium is commonly fabricated into the following downstream products:
