Entity Definition

What is Grade 1 Titanium?

Grade 1 is the lowest-strength, softest, and most ductile grade in the commercially pure (CP) titanium family. It offers the highest formability and corrosion resistance among CP grades, making it ideal for applications requiring severe forming operations and exposure to corrosive environments.

Classification

Commercially Pure Titanium (Alpha Phase)
UNS Number

UNS R50250

Common Names

CP-Ti Grade 1 UNS R50250 Ti Grade 1 ASTM B265 Grade 1

Key Characteristics

  • Highest formability and ductility among all CP titanium grades
  • Exceptional corrosion resistance in oxidizing and mildly reducing environments
  • Low strength compared to alloyed titanium grades
  • Excellent weldability with minimal post-weld treatment
  • Non-magnetic and biocompatible
Applicable Standards

Applicable Standards

Grade 1 titanium conforms to the following international material standards:

ASTM B265 — Standard Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Strip, Sheet, and Plate

Processing Methods

Available Processing Methods

Grade 1 titanium can be processed using the following manufacturing techniques:

Cold forming — Excellent; can be severely deformed without intermediate annealing
Hot forming — Readily formable at 260–540°C (500–1,000°F)
CNC machining — Fair to good; requires sharp tools and slow speeds to prevent work hardening
TIG welding — Excellent; no post-weld heat treatment required for most applications
Laser welding — Excellent weld quality with proper shielding gas coverage
Resistance welding — Suitable for spot and seam welding
Chemical etching / pickling — Good response to standard HF/HNO₃ acid baths
Electropolishing — Produces bright, clean surface finish
Anodizing — Supports Type II and Type III anodizing for enhanced wear and corrosion resistance
Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) — Reduces residual porosity in cast or powder forms
Downstream Products

Typical Products & Components

Grade 1 titanium is commonly fabricated into the following downstream products:

Chemical processing vessels, tanks, and heat exchangers
Piping systems for corrosive fluid handling
Valve bodies and pump components for chemical and marine service
Architectural cladding panels and roofing
Marine hardware — propeller shafts, rudders, seawater piping
Desalination plant equipment
Food processing equipment
Electrodes for electrochemical processes
Heat exchanger tubing and tube sheets
Ducting and ventilation components
Alternative Materials

Alternative Materials

Depending on application requirements, Grade 1 may be substituted by:

304L / 316L Stainless Steel — Lower cost but inferior corrosion resistance in chloride environments
Hastelloy C-276 — Superior corrosion resistance in harsh reducing environments but significantly higher cost
Nickel 200 / 201 — Alternative for caustic service where titanium may be unsuitable
